A bit of text has recently been making the rounds among the more conservative friends in my Facebook feed in typical conservative chain mail fashion. You know, where the originator pastes a blob of text, gives it an attribution, and provides no link whatsoever to the original source. So anyone who actually wants to verify it must turn to Google and/or Snopes for help. Most of the time, it turns out the attribution is wrong, the original has been modified, or the whole thing is just nonsense.
In this case, it’s a rant that seems to have them all excited. Attributed to a fellow named Mychal Massie, it’s typical extreme conservative tripe, worthy even of the Tea Party Seal of Approval. Here’s one example.
I’ve made no secret of my contempt for the Obamas. As I responded to the person who asked me the aforementioned question, I don’t like them because they are committed to the fundamental change of my/our country into what can only be regarded as a Communist state.
Yet another uninformed soul, ignorant of the meaning of the word communism and what it actually means to be a communist state. The rest of it is filled with a listing of everything Obama has supposedly lied about and how he’s brought disrespect to the office of the presidency. Again, with no links to any sources — these are things conservatives are expected to already “know” or will just take at face value. There’s nothing in the text itself that stands out as anything to be excited about. This is the same stuff you see all around the right-wing echo chamber. But there’s something special about this particular text. The author, you see, is black.
As it turns out, this is one of the rare cases where an unsourced text shared by conservatives on Facebook happens to be legit. Mychal Massie is a conservative blogger with a blog he calls The Daily Rant: Hard Hitting Conservative Commentary. The text is a post he made last January, copied in its entirety, called Why I Do Not Like The Obamas. The preamble added to the version on Facebook explains the novelty.
The below summarization of Barack and Michelle Obama’s 5 year reign in the White House is by far the best I’ve ever read as it squarely hits the nail on the head. And it took a black reporter writing it to make it as effective as it is. A white man’s account would be instantly criticized by the liberal media as pure racism. But, how can anyone scream Racist when an exacting description of the Obamas is penned by a well known journalist of color?
See, this is vindication for all of the vile, nasty things the right has said about the Obamas over the past five years. How could it be racist if a black man agrees?
Yeah, well, that’s nice. What I don’t see in this post, though, are pictures of Obama as a monkey. Nor do I see anything about the Put the White Back in the White House meme. Nor any of the other numerous, racist memes the right has spread over the past five years. I haven’t looked through the whole blog, so those things might be tucked away in there somewhere. The point is, a black man espousing some of the things a bunch of white racists believe does not magically make those whites “not racist.” And even if he did post Obama Monkey pictures, that would not suddenly become a “not racist” act.
Racism abounds on the right, particularly among those of the Tea Party variety. It was brought to the fore as soon as Obama became a presidential candidate and has been abundantly evident online ever since. If conservatives want to distance themselves from racism, then they ought to stop spreading racist memes rather than holding up as their savior a black man who is just as ignorant and deluded as they are.
