How Far Will We Go?

A few weeks ago, I posted my thoughts on the importation of Muslim culture to the West. It’s something we shouldn’t tolerate. Ideals and practices that are incompatible with freedom and human rights have no place in Western society. A recent article in the Daily Mail shows that it’s gotten to the point of silliness in the UK. The title says it all: “Muslims outraged at police advert featuring cute puppy sitting in policeman’s hat.”

I was sure I had misread, or misunderstood, the title. Or that it must be a joke. Or that there must be some jab at Islam in the ad. As it turns out, it was none of the above.

The advert has upset Muslims because dogs are considered ritually unclean and has sparked such anger that some shopkeepers in Dundee have refused to display the advert.

They get outraged when we publish cartoons of their silly prophet. They get outraged when we destroy a copy of their precious holy book. Now they get outraged when we show pictures of puppies in a community to which they have immigrated. To them, I say sit down, shut up, and deal with it. You immigrated to a society with a culture that is not your own. It is you who should adapt, not your host country.

Unfortunately, the bigger issue lies with the police who put out the ad. Their response to the ‘outrage’ is outrageous itself.

‘We did not seek advice from the force’s diversity adviser prior to publishing and distributing the postcards. That was an oversight and we apologise for any offence caused.’

The policy of cultural sensitivity coupled with the immunity from criticism granted to religious belief has created an environment where people feel they are entitled to be offended. Muslims bring their backward, violent, offensive ways to the West and we apologize for offending them. Why are they not apologizing for offending us? We’ve got it all wrong.

As I mentioned in the previous post linked above, Westerners who spend any amount of time in Muslim countries are expected to follow the local cultural rules during their stay. It’s past time we extend the same courtesy to them. Especially those who immigrate. It’s apologizing for pictures of puppies today. What’s it going to be tomorrow?
