The Incredible Hulk

The wife and I finally got around to seeing the new Hulk flick last night. I’ll chime in with everyone else and say that it’s tremendously better than the first attempt (though some people give Ang Lee more credit than others).

This Hulk reboot has something for everyone. Fans of the comic (/me raises hand) should be happy that it reestablishes the origin of Hulk as they know it in place of the alternative Ang Lee version. Though it’s only seen in the opening credits, it’s the root of the whole story. They should also be happy to see the Abomination, a long time nemesis of the Hulk. Fans of the old TV series (/me raises hand) should enjoy the nods in that direction including a Lou Ferrigno cameo, some camera shots reminiscent of the old series, and a few bars of the TV theme. Nostalgia for teh win.

More importantly, this is the smashing brawlfest a Hulk movie should be. There are no long stretches of tedium. This is an action movie for sure. Edward Norton may not be the perfect fit for the role of Bruce Banner, IMO, but he’s close enough. For me, it was good to see Tim Roth again. He’s always been one of my favorite character actors, but being in Korea I haven’t had the opportunity to see much of his work over the years (the most recent being a few years back — The Musketeer, Planet of the Apes).

Some of the Marvel hero movies to date have been less than stellar, with the rest being just above tolerable. Both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk have raised the bar. I hope the upcoming Marvel movies (Wolverine, Thor, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers) can keep the trend going.
