Spending time wondering why Bush hasn’t yet been impeached makes my head hurt. It’s a travesty, really. Congress has failed gloriously in its duty. I don’t care what the rationale is, the resfusal to bring about impeachment hearings on a president who has so blatantly broken the law and violated the rights guaranteed by the Constitution is a black mark on our nation’s history and a dangerous precedent for future generations. No sitting House Speaker should ever have the right to declare that impeachment is ‘off the table’. That’s why the 35 articles of impeachment introduced by Dennis Kucinich this past week, that are now awaiting action by the House Judiciary Committee, are so important.
Whether or not Bush actually gets removed from office is irrelevant at this point. It should have happened years ago, but now there’s likely not enough time. Besides which, I don’t think anyone wants to see The Dick at the helm of this sunken ship we call America. The importance has been highlighted several times by pundits and bloggers over the past few days: we need impeachment hearings to try and learn the extent of the Bush administration’s crimes and we need them so that there is an historical record that criminal actions by a sitting president have consequences.
That’s why members of Veterans For Peace on Wednesday presented 23,000 impeachment petitions to House Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers. Not only are they demanding the impeachment of Bush, they also want Cheney impeached. All Americans who value the rule of law, the freedoms established by our Constitution, and the principles upon which our nation was founded should make their voices heard in support of impeachment. Call, write, do whatever you need to do. Make sure John Conyers and your representative know that you want your country back. Remind them of their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
