Indiana Jones

I had planned to see Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull on opening day. It’s one of those movies I’ve been hoping for years to see made, like the Lord of the Rings movies and Die Hard 4. When something like that comes around, I usually hop in the theater as soon as it’s possible to do so. This time though, the wife and I made plans with a friend to see it over the weekend. So I forced myself to wait a few days.

I’ve mentioned on this blog a few times that I usually go into movies with low expectations. That’s rather hard to do with an Indiana Jones flick. Still, I tried not to expect too much because I didn’t want to be disappointed, particularly after seeing a couple of lackluster posts about it the past couple of days in the blog feeds I keep up with. I’m quite happy to say that it was well worth the price of admission. It’s not the best of the series, but it’s certainly enjoyable.

There were a couple of cultural quirks that show up now and then when watching an American movie in a Korean theater. I’m sure that in most any cinema in America, there would have been some sort of reaction to the glimpse of the Ark when Indie busts out of the warehouse, or when Karen Allen first shows up. Raiders of the Lost Ark, the whole series actually, is ingrained in American culture. While most Koreans know Harrison Ford, and many know Indiana Jones, the series is not such a phenomenon here. The only reactions I noticed during those scenes were from the few foreigners in the audience. Still, the theater where we saw it had two sold out cinemas showing the movie at the same time. We had to reserve seats two days in advance.

That’s two for two. Though I didn’t blog it, my wife and I saw Iron Man the weekend it opened here. That’s one of the better Marvel superhero movies I’ve seen. I’m not sure what’s next on the list. We sort of want to see Prince Caspian, but considering that the first Narnia movie was a bit of a let down we might just wait for the DVD.
