In Korea, today is Jongwol Daeborum, or the day of the first full moon of the Lunar calendar year. One of the interesting things about this day each year, and usually for a few days before, is that you can find little Mom & Pop stores putting bags of walnuts and peanuts on display. It’s a long standing custom to eat walnuts or peanuts on this day as a way to avoid getting skin diseases, like boils. You can read more about Jongwol Daeborum and the associated customs in this informative article.
I’m not a big fan of either walnuts or peanuts myself, except perhaps when they are in ice cream (Peanut Buster Parfait how I’ve missed you so since DQ disappeared from Korea). I’m quite hooked on cashews, though. I wonder if they will protect me?
