Namdaemun Fire

The big news in Korea today is a fire that severely damaged an historic national treasure in central Seoul last night. Namdaemun (the Great South Gate), also called Sungnyemun, was designated some time ago by the Korean government as National Treasure #1. It is one of two gates (the other being Dongdaemun, the Great East Gate) that remain from the wall that once surrounded the city of Seoul. A market has been located nearby for around 600 years. Last night, there was a fire that caused the entire top tier of the gate to collapse. It was apparently arson. I've got one pic of the gate before the fire that I took back in September and a few others I took this morning around 10:00, all of which you can see in the slideshow below. There are a few pictures of the actual blaze over at the English Xinhua. Fortunately, no one was hurt. But it's sad to see such an historic structure deliberately damaged this way. Namdaemun is one of the most well-known landmarks in Seoul and attracts tourists in droves. In the past, it was not accessible to pedestrian traffic because it was essentially on an island in the middle of a major thoroughfare. As part of president-elect Lee Myung Bak's campaign to beautify Seoul when he was mayor of the city, he had the boulevard restructured and created a pedestrian access to the gate. Since that time, the barrier surrounding the gate has been opened from time to time to allow people to pass through Namdaemun itself, while guards dressed in traditional uniforms stand nearby. I can't count the number of times I've passed by over the years. Being the history nut I am, the gate never lost its wonder. Now it's just a pile of wood and bricks.

This is so sad. Just coming back from Seoul after spending 4 years in country, this shocked me to my core like September 11th did. The only way I can take heart is to remember that the gate was severely damaged during the war and it came back. So it will again.
