Waterboarding Redux
The current controversy over waterboarding is not the first time America has come into conflict over this issue. vjack has a great post over at Atheist Revolution on how there was a public debate on the very same technique over 100 years ago after its use by American forces in the Philippines. Back then, as now, right-wing Christian bigotry played a large role in creating support for it. History really does repeat itself.

Were I J. Jonah Jameson, I might have titled this post “The Teabagger Menace”. Despite the fact that they claim to be, and are claimed to be, average Americans, these people are proving to be batshit crazy. They’ve been making ridiculous comments and holding up ridiculous signs since the beginning of their “movement”, but now [...]

If you’ve been looking for an American version of Tommy Douglas, it’s looking more and more like there isn’t going to be one. Instead of the Greatest American, the savior of countless lives through his unyielding support for health care reform, we’re stuck with the Worst American, one on whom we can heap most of [...]

Fossilized bacteria in the Allan Hills 84001 Meteorite, originally announced well over a decade ago, has now been verified to really be fossilized bacteria. I remember the controversy back then, with scientists being split over whether it was really bacteria or simply natural crystal formations. I so wanted it to be true that we really [...]

The Obama administration has been working closely with Egypt to introduce a resolution to the UN Human Rights Council. The resolution is, apparently, an attempt to kowtow to Muslim countries. But it does so in a deplorable manner.
The U.N. Human Rights Council approved a U.S.-backed resolution Friday deploring attacks on religions while insisting that freedom [...]

The number of fundamentalist Jews in Israel has been increasing for years, but now it seems to be coming to a point that the secular people of the world should be worried.
Israel’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community has come a long way.
No longer are they the inward-looking anti-Zionists who only cared that the government provide them with [...]

Given that the Democrats currently control both houses of Congress as well as the White House, and that the Republicans are currently showing no desire to contribute anything meaningful to the health care debate but are instead dead set on preventing Obama from effectively governing, you’d think that the Democrats would ignore them and get [...]

Over 300 skeptics, freethinkers, atheists, or however you want to label them, recently invaded Ken Ham’s monument to ignorance, the Creation Museum. Led by PZ Myers, the group’s mission was to see just how badly this place misrepresents science and to gain more ammunition with which to mock Ham and creationists in general. Apparently, it [...]

Considering how rabid all these anti-health care reform people are in their disruptions of town hall meetings across America, one would assume that they must have some pretty shiny health insurance plans themselves. One would be wrong.
A wingnut named Kenneth Gladney recently made headlines when he was “injured” (watch the video to judge for yourself) [...]

Thanks for the link. I think the key here is dehumanization. When the enemy can be effectively dehumanized, the door to mistreatment opens.
