Chuseok is Here Again

Korea’s Chuseok holiday, essentially a celebration of the harvest moon, is on Tuesday, Sep 25 this year on the Gregorian calendar. I wrote a bit about it last year and described how my wife and I visit her parents’ house for the holiday. Because this year’s holiday results in a five-day weekend, we decided to make the trip yesterday (Sunday), thinking that most people would be leaving on Friday and Saturday and that we could avoid the traffic. Well, not so much. It took a little over three hours to get here. That’s pretty much double what it normally takes, but it was bearable.

My in-laws have no computers in their house, but one of Korea’s infamous PC bahngs is right down the street. I’m sitting in the place now. I’ve got a few things going on that I need to keep up with while I’m here — several email conversations and a support issue with an open source project I maintain. I’m also trying to find out why I haven’t heard anything about the virtual private server I paid for several days ago. I’m going to be sitting here for a bit, I think, since my neice is next to me playing a game. The rest of the family is back out the house making songpyeon, so being out of the house spares me from getting pulled into doing it! I did spend a few hours yesterday peeling chestnuts with a knife.

I just read something ridiculously silly regarding a bunch of bishops whose panties are all wadded up, but I’ll save the commentary on that for another post :)
