Moron of the Week #3
After skipping last week, Moron of the Week is back. This week, it’s a group award.
You may never have heard of them, but Stream of Passion is a rock band formed in 2005 over the internet. It’s a mix of international musicians who share a common love of Rock-n-Roll. Currently, you can read on the band’s home page, and on guitarist Lori Linstruth’s blog, the band’s official statement on their recent treatment by British immigration authorities in Caliais, France, as they were en route to some gigs in the UK:
Stream of Passion suffered a terrible blow on Friday afternoon when the band arrived at Calais, France to board the Ferry to England. The Mexican band members were instantly separated from the group, and each other, and were interrogated by British and French Police for four grueling hours. All because the British immigration service was convinced they were intending to take up illegal residence in England.
The end result of the interrogation was that the Mexicans were refused entry to the UK. Because of this, the band was forced to cancel that portion of their tour. You can read more details about the incident, from Lori Linstruth’s perpective, in another post on her blog.
It’s not uncommon for Mexicans to be given the shaft in America, where so many conservatives live in paranoia that illegal immigrants are stealing their jobs (you know, picking oranges and cleaning hotel rooms, the most common jobs among the middle class white American conservatives most threatened by illegal immigrants). I was unaware that Mexicans had a hard time getting into the UK as well.
So this week’s Moron of the Week award goes to the UK Immigration Service for the zeal with which they carry out their duties. Citizens of the UK should sleep soundly knowing that they are protected from the likes of Mexican headbangers wielding guitars and microphones. In this age of terrorist threats, jihads and losing of heads, it is assuring that government officials are keeping their citizens safe from the severe threat posed by Mexican rockers.
Three cheers to the UK Immigration Service, the collective Moron of the Week.
