More Evidence of the Insanity of Religion

The practice of slicing foreheads by some Shiites is something that has been in the news before. The fact that even the heads of young children are cut open is enough to outrage any human being who has even a shred of moral decency. The Western media has often reported on the brutality of some Muslim practices, particularly those carried out under Sharia law. Followers of other religions and those who follow no religion at all are often quick to express outrage and denounce such acts as barbaric. But before they do so, they ought to look in their own back yards.

In Canada, the government of British Columbia had to take extreme measures to save the lives of three children whose parents didn’t bother to — because it is against their religion. The mother gave birth to a set of sextuplets earlier this month. The babies were premature and at least five of them required blood transfusions to survive. Unfortunately for the young newborns, their parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses. Under their belief system, blood transfusions are prohibited. Two of the children died before the government finally got court orders to save the other three who needed the transfusions. The parents were out of the hospital when the government stepped in, but their response to the action is abominable:

The parents will be back in court later in February where they will argue against future seizures, and, according to their lawyer, demand an apology for what they call the province’s outrageous and illegal handling of their case.

When people believe that saving human lives is outrageous, isn’t it time for more sensible folk to question such a belief system?

If you are a Christian, don’t bother getting smug and self-righteous while denouncing the heathens who follow the wrong religions. There are plenty of Christian lunatics out there as well. You need look no further than the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. WBC is a group of morons led by a lunatic named Fred Phelps. Their slogan, “God Hates Fags”, offers just a glimpse of their twisted world view. They believe that all of the tragedy in the world is god’s punishment being visited upon us because of society’s growing tolerance of homosexuality. The websites godhatesfags.com and godhatesamerica.com are affiliated with the church. Members regularly picket the funerals of American soldiers slain in Iraq, displaying signs like those in the image below:

In an interview on Hannity & Colmes on Fox, one crazy bitch even said that the Amish girls who were murdered in their school house last year deserved to die. An editorial in the local newspaper of Missoula, Montana, blasts the group for their abuse of Free Speech after they picketed a fallen soldier’s funeral there.

Most mainstream Christian organizations try to distance themselves from the WBC. Regardless of whether or not other Christians agree with them, the group is most certainly the spawn of Christianity. History is rife with examples of fundamentalism bred by religious belief. I don’t care that most Christians, Muslims or other believers are not fundamentalist zealots. The practice of religious tolerance allows this sort of lunacy to persist and grow. I’m tired of deferring to someone’s religious beliefs to avoid hurting their feelings. That’s a practice that really must end. Religion regularly intrudes upon and interferes with the lives of those who try to live without it. Believers make their best efforts to impose their belief on others, thinking they are doing good deeds. Yet it is socially unacceptable for atheists to criticize them. All the while, religion acts as a smokescreen for fundamentalists like the WBC and acts of barbarism like letting babies die.

If you are tired of hypocrisy, bigotry, barbarism in the name of God, and the continuing damage that religion is causing our world, speak up! Take a step to assert your right to be a nonbeliever and protest against the insanity religion has wrought. Consider becoming a bright, or accept the Blasphemy Challenge. Download and play the comical game, I Am Jesus, where you get to be Jesus and kill the 12 disciples in revenge for letting you get crucified. Whatever you do, just do something. Don’t sit idly by anymore while religion destroys our world.

Hey, my dude. Yes religion is a sick and twisted vehicle for human follies too frequently. But I think you might be doing the same thing some of these lunatics are doing. Except in your case, you’ve got a problem with all religions except atheism. My dude, don’t blame the “dentist” for the “cavities.” Don’t blame “Crest” and “Colgate” for the root canals. Collective guilt is a fallacy, one that led to another insanity to destroy religion: The Holocaust. My dude, keep it real, and don’t give in to the cynicism.

I appreciate the comment, but I disagree with your assessment that I am somehow the same as those religious nuts. I’ve written several paragraphs as a rebuttal in a new post.

I agree with your sentiments regarding J.W. beliefs and remember the news coverage re: the sextuplets.

My blog exposes the failed prophecies of the Watchtower and discusses Witness-related issues, such as pedophilia and thought control methodology.
