The Decider’s decision to increase troop levels in Iraq is a terrible mistake. He has ignored everyone that has told him so, going so far as to replace top Generals Abizaid and Casey, both of whom think increasing troop levels is a mistake. The Iraq Study Group, commissioned to help find a new strategy in Iraq, recommended troop reductions. Bush is ignoring that one just as he did the rest of the group’s suggestions.
Increasing the troop levels in Iraq will prolong the war, stretch the military to its limits, and put more American lives in danger. After nearly four years of failure, a troop increase is not going to bring the victory Bush so desires to achieve. Beside, the American people spoke loudly and clearly in November — they want the war to end.
If you are an American citizen, it is imperative that you do what you can to help prevent this new tragedy from taking place. MoveOn.org has begun a petition to Congress in an effort to get them mobilized against escalation of troops in Iraq. In the first 18 hours, 160,000 people signed the petition. Senator Ted Kennedy made it known that he will announce new legislation to stop the escalation. Senator Kennedy says,
We cannot simply speak out against an escalation of troops in Iraq. We must act to prevent it.
Senator Kennedy’s new bill:
Section 1. Prohibition on use of funds for escalation of United States forces in Iraq. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be obligated or expended by the United States Government to increase the number of United States forces in Iraq above the number for such forces which existed as of January 9, 2007, without a specific authorization of Congress by law for such an increase.

Your senators and representative will get a copy of the petition, with any personal note you wish to attach. Let them know that we cannot let a reckless president be reckless any longer. American lives are at stake. Demand that they do the job they were elected to do — provide a check and balance on the other branches of government.
