Another Religious Nutjob

A man who fired a gun recently outside of the Italian consulate in Istanbul, in Protest of the Pope’s upcoming visit, says that he “fired the shots for God.” He also said that if the Pope “was here now I would strangle him with my bare hands.” This is the sort of person I was talking about in a recent post in which a reader (understandably) misinterpreted what I wrote and accused me of calling all Muslims “bloodthirsty savages”. Terrorists and people who make death-threats like this moron, no matter what their religious background, are bloodthirsty savages. People who complain loudly about any perceived insult, whether I agree with them or not, are exercising their right to speak freely. But once death threats enter the picture they are in the realm of fanaticism.

I’ve been posting frequently about religion lately. The reason is because it has been in the forefront of my thoughts as one of the major contributing factors contributing to the world’s problems. I mentioned in a recent post about the Kerry gaffe that I’ve got a lot to say on the motivation for all of the negative campaigning that’s been going on. Part of that has to do with political ideology, but religious ideology is a contributing factor as well. I still intend to post my thoughts on the subject in the near future. I just need to find a good block of time to put it in textual form. It’s going to be a long post. I want to make sure the intent is clear so that I’m not misunderstood.
