Even the good people of this world can do bad things, which doesn’t excuse it, but I think it’s alot harder than you think it is to accurately label individual users as scum or bad people.

I realize that good people do bad things (I’ve done a few things in my life that I shouldn’t have). But it’s been my experience that good people will continue to do bad things if they don’t perceive that they are hurting anyone by doing it. Again and again, until they either wake up and get a guilty conscience or they get caught.

The problem is that people are generally short-sighted and fail to see the big picture, even when it’s pointed out to them. It’s like they’re wearing blinders. And it impacts several aspects of our society. As a current example, there are some genuinely good people who are opposed to same-sex marriage and see nothing bigoted or discriminatory about their behavior. But I have no problem calling them bigots, no matter how good they may be, because they want to exclude a segment of our society from enjoying the same rights they do.

By that same token, it’s very easy for me to call a pirate a scumbag. I don’t care if it’s someone who rescues babies from burning buildings as a day job. Having multiple facets to one’s personality doesn’t mean we have to focus only on the good parts. Besides which, we rarely see every facet of other people even when we are close to them. We can only know someone by their deeds. It’s quite possible for one person to be both a hero and a scumbag. So I have no problem with using both words to describe the same person when the shoes fit.

The bits I pointed out make no sense. In order to make an argument for something, it helps if your arguments are logical.
