World Cup Noise
As I type this, Korea is playing a World Cup match. I have no idea which country they are playing, nor do I care. I wouldn’t be blogging about this except that my normally quiet neighborhood has been transformed. Across the street from my house is a church. Tonight, the church parking lot has been outfitted with a giant TV and filled with a miniature sea of red - howling, moaning, screaming, laughing, and generally obnoxiously loud Korean soccer fans bedecked with red shirts and devil’s horns. Add to that every other car honking one of the Korean chants as it rides by and I am horribly annoyed. Even with my windows closed they are loud.
A few minutes ago I stepped outside to get a look at the scene and see how it was set up. When my wife asked where I was going, I jokingly remarked that I intended to go yell out some choice curses to the parking lot freaks. When she subsequently heard a loud ruckus coming from the church, she came rushing outside thinking I had incited a riot. She was relieved to see me walking back toward our house. No matter how pissed I get, I have more sense than to yell at a mob of Koreans in the middle of watching a World Cup match. My wife’s momentary lapse of faith was disturbing, but she explained that the look on my face had been quite apocalyptic.
Were it not nearly 11 pm, and were I not winding down for the day, I wouldn’t be bothered. For now, though, all I can do is hope that Korea gets knocked out early so things can go back to normal more quickly. Unfortunately, the sound of the crowd tonight indicates that they are doing well in this match. Oh, goodie! Now they’re blowing whistles and beating drums.
