Score One for Common Sense

A Fulton County judge struck down Georgia’s gay marriage ban, the one voted for by the people in the last election. Her reasoning was that it violated the State Constitution, which stipulates that ballot questions be constrained to a single subject. The good ol’boy governor, Sonny Perdue, apparently wasn’t impressed by the decision:

“The people of Georgia knew exactly what they were doing when an overwhelming 76 percent voted in support of this constitutional amendment,” he said. “It is sad that a single judge has chosen to reverse this decision.”

What’s sad is that the Governor doesn’t understand his state’s constitution. What’s even sadder is that my home state is full of redneck, homophobic hypocrites. In the same breath they will tell you that our boys in Iraq are dying for Freedom, but that homosexuals shouldn’t marry. Let’s not start on the racism that still seethes below the surface. Sometimes it’s still out in the open. I’m hesitant to take my wife home, being that she’s Korean, because I know some redneck dipshit is going to give us trouble at one point or another. Georgians are true patriots. They love America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave (that is, the Free and Brave who are white, heterosexual and call themselves Christian).

Kudos to Judge Russell for reversing a discriminatory law that never should have been left up to the people to decide. It’s good to know that somewhere in Georgia, common sense still has a place, even if it is only temporary. The next election will probably see a new ballot question, I’m sure. I wonder why the U.S. didn’t put the invasion of Iraq up for public vote? If the people are qualified to decide if homosexuals have basic rights, they surely must be qualified to decide if America should invade another country.

Another story in which I’m hoping for common sense to prevail is the class action lawsuit being brought against Verizon, BellSouth, and AT&T on behalf of the American people. Nearly everyone with a phone number will be eligible for money if the telcos lose. I’m sure a lot of people will be wanting to get in on that, no matter where they stand on the government spying issue. If the telcos lose, I say sue the FBI and the NSA next.
